Were the nineties the best decade for comics on an objective level? No, I can’t say that. I can say that the nineties were the Silver Age of my personal collecting and reading career, so I have a lot of affection for it.

One of the things that I still think is awesome is that Marvel (and other companies) included trading cards in bagged versions of their books. I can see where people that weren’t there at the time or were there at the time and are merciless assassins of fun* might think they’re silly, but it’s one of the elements of that era that I just love. It was fun. Not only did you get a comic book but you also get a trading card to put with your other trading cards.

I don’t know. I just think it’s cool.

X-Cutioner’s Song was the X-crossover from 1992 and I will be the first to admit that it’s not the best of the crossovers we got during that era. It’s not terrible, but it wasn’t as good as Inferno or Mutant Massacre. One of the things that did separate it from the pack was that the issues of X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor, and X-Force were all bagged with a trading cards. It made buying the issues more fun. At least for me. Your opinions might vary.

Anyway, I posted the cards above the text. Enjoy.

*”Merciless assassin of fun” is a term that I believe I first head on Hey Kids Comics, hosted by Andrew Leyland (my co-host on the Overlooked Dark Knight) and his son Micheal. I don’t remember which one of them said it, but I thought it was funny.

About Michael Bailey...

Husband. Pet dad to two mentally unstable poodles. Podcaster, but not the alpha-bro kind. Amateur Superman historian. Semi-Professional writer. Leap baby.

Mission Statement

The Bailey Planet is a lot of things. Part blog. Part journal. Part ramblings of a middle-aged man that is semi-retired as a comic book reader and collector. Part second home for the podcasts I host or co-host. Part archives for stuff I’ve scanned over the years. Part archives for anything related to The Death and Return of Superman.

It’s a lot of things.

As the graphic states, the focus will be Superman, Batman, and more. The more can be just about anything to do with comics and super-heroes. Expect more DC content than Marvel, but it’s not off the table.

I have a Patreon. It is essentially a tip jar for the moment, so I can’t promise exclusive content, but if you could chip in $1 a month that would help the cost of this site and the podcasts I produce. If you can’t, that’s cool. I know times are hard.
