According to the 1976 DC Calendar, April 1st is the birthday of Mister Mxyzptlk.
Which is one of the least surprising things ever.
Mxy is a fun character that I like but to as much as some of my fellow Superman fans. I do enjoy the post-Crisis era version more than the pre-Crisis version, but that’s simply a matter of taste and not an indictment of those stories. Greg Rucka wrote my favorite version from the comics during his Adventures of Superman run.
And I cannot read any version without hearing the late Gilbert Gottfried’s voice. I cannot say enough good things about the Mxy we got on Superman: The Animated Series.
For a variety of reasons, I hate April 1st. I think April Fools Day is one of those things that is at best annoying and at worst the weaponization of trust. I’m not a fan of fooling someone for personal amusement. To be fair, Jeff and I used to do April Fools episodes of From Crisis to Crisis, but those were not meant to fool anyone. Just an excuse to do something goofy. We never did those thinking, “This will fool everyone!” because obviously it wouldn’t.
What I’m saying is that it’s nice to have something Superman related to “celebrate” on April 1st.
