I am going to apologize to Sectaurs fans right at the top of this. Because I may end up upsetting you.
Look, I as am nostalgic for toy lines from the eighties that got a comic book tie-in as the next Gen Xer/Millennial, but the Sectaurs never did anything for me. Maybe it was because they didn’t have a cartoon. Maybe it’s because I don’t remember ever seeing them on the toy aisle. It could be both, but it seems like this ad is trying to put them on the same level as Transformers and GI Joe and that doesn’t compute for me.
To be fair, the series, which only lasted eight issues, might have been good. ROM: Space Knight was a toy line that didn’t last long, but the series is quite good from what I’ve heard and both Sectaurs and Rom were written by Bill Mantlo. So I could be sleeping on a hidden gem.
The vibe I’m getting from this ad is, “We don’t think an ad with the Sectaurs by themselves would grab readers, but if we put them on an ad with Transformers and GI Joe maybe people will associate them with those successes and buy the book.”
I could be wrong.
I don’t think I am, but I could be wrong.
This ad does make me want to dive into back issues of Transformers and GI Joe.
