One of the running gags I’ve been doing as part of the This Week in History segment on Superman Homepage Live (the weekly live stream that I do with Steve Younis and Marc Lax for the Superman Homepage) is noting how, back in the mid-seventies, the Superboy title went from starring or featuring the Legion of Super-Heroes to the title being called Superboy AND the Legion of Super-Heroes. This ad is from 1979 when the Legion went their own way and The New Adventures of Superboy started.
This is not supported by anything beyond my own petty amusement, but when I read the copy on this ad, I read it that Superboy is being REALLY passive-aggressive with his statements. “Isn’t it great that the Legion finally gets their own book and I have my own title again that I don’t have to share. And ignore the fact that I’m crying on the cover of the Legion title. It’s not because I finally had a breakdown over sharing space with those people and had to fly off because Cosmic Boy said I was being dramatic and Saturn Girl told me she could read my mind and knew that I was being a petty brat.”
This is just me. I realize that.
Still…it makes me chuckle.
