I’m kind of fascinated by this ad.
The art, by Carlos Pacheco and Jesus Merino, is from the cover of Superman #654, which was the first issue proper of Kurt Busiek’s run after teaming up with Geoff Johns for the Up, Up, and Away story that was part of the whole One Year Later thing.
You would think this would be mentioned somewhere on this ad.
In fact, there is absolutely no copy on this ad outside of the Superman logo, the fact that the book is monthly and the phone number of the Comic Shop Locator Service, which used to be a thing I would use when my wife and I went on vacation.
That’s really weird. Again, you would think they would want to be pushing fan favorite writer Busiek starting his big run on Superman with amazing art by Pacheco and Merino. While I wasn’t the biggest fan of Camelot Falls it was a major storyline. I’m legit shocked that DC didn’t put any of that on this ad.
Maybe it was a minimalist thing. Less is more. Let the artwork sell the book.
I don’t know.
It’s weird.
