The first time I ever walked away from the Superman books was towards the end of the New Krypton storyline. I’ve written about this before, but for those coming in late (or just finding me because of this post) I by 2009 I was going through a very regrettable fan temper tantrum because the Superman books had changed (and been different for years) and I wasn’t ready to accept that.
I don’t justify it, but at the same time I don’t run from it either. It’s a part of my Superman fan career and I own everything…good or bad. At the time I considered New Krypton to be indicative of everything DC was doing wrong with Superman and his world and I wasn’t shy about talking about that.
It was a whole thing.
A whole, embarrassing thing.
A few years back Paul Hicks of the DCOCD podcast invited me to be on an episode of the show to talk about New Krypton. Paul, Dr. Anj (of the Supergirl Shortbox Commentary blog) had a fun conversation about the saga, but the biggest takeaway I had was that I actually liked the story. I saw what the writers were going for absent the prejudices I had at the time. It helped that I was in a better place mentally and it also helped that there had been like fifteen revamps and reboots between the time the story was originally published and when we recorded that episode.
I’m not saying it became my favorite Superman story ever, but given some of the stories we’ve gotten since New Krypton wrapped up it definitely has my respect and I’m glad it is currently getting the omnibus treatment.
This ad is okay. I love the Alex Ross image but the black at the top throws it off a bit. This looks like something I would put together, not something from a professional comic book company.
