The image above comes from an issue of Direct Currents, the DC newsletter that you would find at comic book shops in the late eighties through the mid-nineties. It was a freebie and really cool. Over the past decade and change I’ve collected as many of them as I could find because I wasn’t a regular visitor to comic shops in the early nineties so I missed out on getting them back then.
For the most part.
Which brings me to the image above. It’s from the Direct Currents from the month that Superman #50 came out and obviously I managed to snag a copy because I’ve had this thing in my files since 1990. I kept it because it was neat and because, for the most part, it was the first time I could put a face to the names that appeared in the comics I read. By this point I had met Roger Stern at a comic shop in Bethlehem, PA earlier in 1990 and Jerry Ordway’s picture was in my first issue of Comics Scene back in 1988, but I had never seen one of Dan.
So I tore this out of Direct Currents (which, in hindsight, was stupid because I should have kept the whole thing) and this article has been with me ever since.
It’s two things at once. First, it’s a snap shot to the Superman books circa 1990, right around the time Lois and Clark got engaged. Second, it’s a keepsake that I absolutely love and now lives on my hard drive in a folder marked Direct Currents.
And now it’s on this site.
