There is a part of me that will always think it was a little unfair that Superboy and Steel got ongoing series shorting after Reign of the Supermen wrapped up and Supergirl only got a four issue mini-series.
To be fair, both Superboy and Steel each had a solid premise to hang a series around. John Henry moves to Washington D.C. and reunites with his family while Superboy moves toe Hawaii and starts a new life with Rex, Dubbilex, Tana, and Roxy serving as his supporting cast. For all I know pitches were sent in for a Supergirl ongoing but nothing stuck. It just rubbed me the wrong way that Supergirl, who had been around longer, was seemingly getting less.
This mini-series (which was part of the Reign of Tomorrow campaign) was an interesting read. In a good way. Supergirl’s relationship with Lex seemed perfectly normal to me when I was sixteen. As I got older that relationship felt a little more icky, so this series, where all of that came to a head, read a lot better to forty something year old me when Jeff and I covered it on From Crisis to Crisis. It also tied into the ongoing subplots (and eventually plot) of the main Super titles where everything to do with Lex being a clone of himself came to a head, so if you ever want to read The Battle For/Fall of Metropolis you’ll want to read this series as well.
As I wrote about yesterday, we eventually got an ongoing Supergirl series. It was definitely worth the wait.
