The Supergirl series that started in 2005 was a mixed bag to begin with. The first storyline by Jeph Loeb and Ian Churchill was fine, as was the One Year Later arc that followed it, but after that it was a roller coaster ride. Some issues I liked. Some I didn’t. And that would be the norm for the next two years.
Then, Sterling Gates and Jamal Igle came on as the writer and penciller respectively and the book completely turned around. The icky feelings of putting an underage girl in provocative outfits and the weird situations the writers placed her in went away and suddenly she felt like a character I wanted to follow.
I was not the biggest fan of the New Krypton storyline when it happened, but I have softened on it in the nearly two decades since it happened. Even when I wasn’t exactly loving the story I loved the Supergirl issues.
I’m glad the Gates/Igle run is getting more love recently. I can’t recommend it enough.
